Ex England international Danny Mills believes it might take a
decade before Manchester United win the Premier League title again.
The reigning champions lost 3-0 at home
to a Steven Gerrard-inspired Liverpool on Sunday and sits seventh in the table,
18 points behind leaders Chelsea and 14 points behind Liverpool, who are
gunning for a first title since the 1990 season.
“It could be 20 years at least before
they Manchester United win the title again,” Mills told BBC.
“The whole rebuilding process is going to
take three or four years at least.”United clinched their 13th league title in
Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of the side the last season but have
struggled under new manager David Moyes.
They are most likely going to lose out of
next season Champions League, having lost out of the league title race and are
12 points adrift one of the top four spots needed to qualify.
Their only hope of playing in Europe’s elite
competition next season is winning the ongoing Champions League, however, they
must overturn a 2-0 deficit against Olympiakos on Wednesday to stay in the
tournament.
“David Moyes has not won the league. He
has not won a trophy,” added Mills.“If he had a good team he might get back in
the top four and Champions League, but I think that they are a long way off
competing and winning the title.“Going into Manchester United, you had to build
on massive success and that is where David Moyes has found it difficult.”
On the Old Trafford pitch on Sunday, it
was a tale of two side with a contrasting fortune so far.United finished last
season 28 points clear of the Merseyside outfit but the appeal of playing in
the glorious Champions League has since become second to none for Brendan
Rodgers’ men.
Gerrard scored twice from the penalty
spot- becoming the only visiting player to have scored the most goal at the
‘Red Devils’s’ home- Luis Suarez scored his 25th goal of the ongoing season and
United captain Nemanja Vidic was sent off for the fourth time against Liverpool.
